How to host a quiz night without internet
A cabin with no signal, a long train ride, a campsite, a flight — the places where a quiz would be most fun are often the places with no internet. Here is how to run a proper multiplayer trivia game anyway, with nothing but phones and Bluetooth.
Why most quiz apps don't work offline
Multiplayer trivia apps usually run through a server: every phone sends its answers over the internet, and the server keeps score. Without a connection, the game simply doesn't start. The alternative is to let the phones talk to each other directly. BrainMesh does this over Bluetooth: nearby phones form a small mesh network, pass questions and answers between themselves, and keep the timers and the leaderboard in sync — no server, no Wi-Fi, no mobile data.
Setting up in two minutes
- Install the app in advance. Do it while you still have internet — at home or at the station. After that, the game itself needs no connection.
- Turn on Bluetooth on every phone and keep the players within a few metres of each other — around one table, in one room or one train compartment.
- One player hosts, the others join. Up to 8 players can take part, and Android and iPhone users play in the same game.
- Pick a category together. Players vote, and everyone gets the same question at the same moment.
Rules and scoring
- Everyone answers the same multiple-choice question against a shared countdown.
- Only correct answers score, and the faster you answer, the more points you get.
- The maximum score per question grows with the number of players, so bigger games feel bigger.
- If everyone answers before the timer runs out, the results appear immediately — no waiting.
- After each question you see the correct answer, how fast everyone was, and the live leaderboard.
What to play
BrainMesh has more than 7,000 questions in English and more than 8,000 in Russian, across 16 categories: History, Science, Geography, Literature, Mathematics, Art, Mythology, Psychology, Technology, Sports, Music, Movies & TV, Video Games, Games, Comics, and Anime & Manga.
A tip for mixed groups: alternate "serious" categories with pop-culture ones, so everyone gets a round they're good at.
Ideas for an offline quiz night
- Road trips and trains: short rounds between stops; passengers can drop in and out.
- Camping and cabins: a tournament over the evening — play to a set number of rounds and keep a paper scoreboard of game wins.
- Flights: Bluetooth works in flight mode on most phones — check your airline's rules.
- Classrooms and clubs: no Wi-Fi password, no accounts, no student data on a server.
- Parties: teams of two sharing one phone let more than 8 people join.
Keep phones charged: Bluetooth and a bright screen for an hour of play use noticeably more battery than usual. A power bank in the middle of the table helps.
