An offline alternative to Kahoot for a group of friends
Kahoot! is great in a classroom with Wi-Fi and a projector. At a cabin, on a train or around a campfire it is a different story. If you want a quiz for a small group with no connection at all, here is what works.
Why Kahoot doesn't work offline
Kahoot! runs through its servers: the host and every player need an internet connection, and in the classic setup the questions are shown on a shared screen while phones are used to answer. No connection or no big screen, no game.
BrainMesh: a quiz that runs on the phones themselves
- No internet. Up to 8 phones connect directly over Bluetooth. Wi-Fi and mobile data can be off.
- No shared screen. Every player sees the question, the timer and the scores on their own phone.
- No accounts or game PINs. One player creates a game, the others join it from a list.
- Android and iPhone together in the same game.
- Ready-made questions: more than 4,200 in English and 4,500 in Russian, across 16 categories.
Made for friends, not for a class
Kahoot is a tool for hosting: the host writes or picks a quiz and runs it. BrainMesh is a game that everyone, including the host, plays:
- Classic quiz, Sort it, Pairs and a Speed round.
- Pranks: freeze a friend's screen, cover their answers with bubbles, shuffle their options.
- A final where you secretly bet points on your friends.
- Awards and an instant rematch.
When Kahoot is still the better choice
If you need your own questions, a class of 30, reports for a teacher or a projector show, use Kahoot. BrainMesh has a fixed question base, a limit of 8 players, and no editor for custom quizzes.
